This course provides an introduction to the unique role of the occupational therapist using a trauma-informed care approach when working with children. The course will define trauma-informed care as it relates to occupational therapy, discuss how to identify the need for a trauma-informed approach, provide specific techniques on the role of sensory processing under a trauma-informed lens, and provide a practical intervention strategy to facilitate adaptation toward success for children with a history of trauma.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Defining and Identifying Trauma-Informed Care in Pediatrics
This chapter will provide an overview of trauma-informed care from the occupational therapy perspective. The chapter will include information on the team approach for addressing children with trauma, how occupational therapists define trauma-informed care, and how to recognize the need for implementation of trauma-informed care in a pediatric population.
2. Considerations in Providing Occupational Therapy Under a Trauma-Informed Lens
This chapter will provide information on specific interventions that occupational therapists provide under the lens of trauma-informed care. Specifically, the chapter will discuss the role of sensory processing in trauma, including when and how to implement sensory interventions with this population. In addition, the chapter will discuss interoception as a separate aspect of sensory processing that has a unique role in trauma-informed care.
3. Facilitating Adaptation to Reach Occupational Therapy Goals
This chapter will discuss occupational adaptation as the underlying theory to guide intervention when working with children with a history of trauma. The chapter will define the theory, discuss how this theory addresses many maladaptive behaviors seen in children with a history of trauma, and provide an application of the theory to facilitate adaptive responses in children with a history of trauma.
