Interventions designed to integrate suspected poorly integrated primitive reflexes have grown in popularity for pediatric occupational therapy. This course will examine the theoretical basis for reflex integration and discuss how it has changed since the early years of sensory integration. It will also provide practitioners an introduction on how to use occupation in assessment and intervention for reflex integration.

Reflex Integration: Where Did It Come From?

1. Reflex Integration: Where Did It Come From?

This course will cover the historical aspects of reflex integration in pediatric occupational therapy, with specific emphasis on the role of primitive reflexes in sensory integration. Participants will learn about current views on reflex integration and how these views have evolved over the years.

Consideration of Occupation in Reflexes

2. Consideration of Occupation in Reflexes

This chapter will focus around AOTA’s Choosing Wisely recommendation number 8, which emphasizes the importance of using occupation when addressing poorly integrated reflexes. Participants will learn about the importance of using a strength-based approach to assessment and intervention, with a focus on occupation when providing interventions regarding reflexes.

Using an Occupation Focus in Reflex Integration

3. Using an Occupation Focus in Reflex Integration

This chapter will focus on the basics of assessment and treatment of reflex integration using occupation. The presenter will discuss the benefits and downfalls, including assessment of reflex integration in a standard sensorimotor assessment. The presenter will provide examples of how to maintain an occupation focus when addressing suspected poorly integrated reflexes.
